On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, and a fragile idea became a country. The men who signed it were printers, planters, lawyers, and merchants, and every one of them was committing treason against the crown by putting his name to the page. Today, on the 250th anniversary, our featured quiz walks through the whole remarkable cast of Founding Fathers, the famous names and the nearly forgotten alike. The Answer
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson
Both men signed the Declaration of Independence, both went on to serve as president, and both died on July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years to the day after the document they helped bring about was adopted. Jefferson was eighty-three; Adams was ninety. As the story has long been told, Adams's final words were "Thomas Jefferson survives," spoken in the belief that his old rival and friend still lived. Jefferson had in fact died a few hours earlier that same afternoon.

July 4, 1776: the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, formally breaking the thirteen colonies from British rule. Among the Committee of Five chosen to draft it was Benjamin Franklin, already the most famous American alive. His life carried him from a candlemaker's son to printer, scientist, inventor, and diplomat. Today's companion quiz traces that whole extraordinary arc.
