A Note From Bob
The conductor who never lost a passenger
Saturday. After escaping slavery in 1849, Harriet Tubman turned around and went back. Across thirteen expeditions on the Underground Railroad, she guided some seventy people to freedom, and she put it plainly: "I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger." Today's featured quiz covers the remarkable life of the woman they called Moses. Pour the coffee.

The Answer
The Combahee River
On June 2, 1863, Tubman guided Union gunboats up the Combahee past Confederate torpedoes to the rice plantations along its banks, where more than 700 enslaved people waded out to freedom in a single night. The freedom won on nights like that was written into the Constitution during the years covered by today's second quiz. That question bridges both of today's quizzes, and 46 more questions are waiting for you.
On This Day
On this day in 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the Union's first Black regiments, led the assault on Fort Wagner in Charleston Harbor. Harriet Tubman was serving with the Army on the South Carolina coast, and by many accounts she cooked for the men of the 54th and helped nurse the wounded afterward. The regiment's courage at Fort Wagner strengthened the case for Black citizenship and the vote, questions the nation would wrestle with for the next fourteen years. Today's second quiz covers those years, with 32 questions on the Reconstruction Era.
